Chief Sitting Bull by Palmquist and Jurgens - Photographic Poster
A wonderful photographic portrait of Hunkpapa Sioux, Chief Sitting Bull. 
 
The photograph captured Chief Sitting Bull in fur-wrapped braids, wearing a single eagle feather in his hair, beaded leggings and moccasins, holding a peace pipe and beaded tab tobacco bag.
 
The Chief learned to write his name upon joining Buffalo Bill's Wild West show in order to sell his autograph to the public and his famous signature is printed on the original photograph.
 
Chief Sitting Bull was a Teton Dakota Indian chief under whom the Sioux tribes united in their struggle for survival on the North American Great Plains. Sitting Bull joined his first war party at the age of 14 and quickly gained a reputation for bravery in battle. In 1868 the Sioux nation accepted peace with the U.S. government, but when gold was discovered in the Black Hills in the mid-1870’s a rush of white prospectors invaded the Sioux lands. Sitting Bull responded but could only win battles, not the war. He was arrested and killed in 1890.
