Brighton Beach has 82 colourful bathing boxes which have become iconic landmark and a symbol of Melbourne’s beach culture.
 
Brighton is one of the wealthier suburbs of Melbourne with luxurious homes built on large residential blocks of land.
 
The famous bathing boxes on Brighton Beach have existed from 1862; the earliest ones were built at the water's edge at the end of Bay Street and are no longer exist. The tram line connecting St Kilda to Brighton was completed in 1906 which created a demand and an increase in applications for bathing box permits. The Bathing huts that we see today were constructed between 1908 and 1911.
