Director John Sturges, made famous by Steve McQueen's legendary motorcycle chase scenes in “The Great Escape”, was originally chosen to direct Le Mans, but withdrew and Lee H. Katzin became Director. The movie features actual footage captured during the 1970 race held the previous June.
Released in June 1971, the film was not a box office hit in the USA, however historically accurate depiction of its era, Le Mans still remains popular today, even though the focus is on car racing and both plot and dialogue draw second place.
